More fresh snow, and return of the sunshine this Sunday!
Another big storm cycle hit Chamonix in the last few days, from Wednesday through Saturday. There was a fluctuating snow/rain line, around 1500-1800m, up above 2000m briefly, and then ending in snow flurries down to the bottom of the Chamonix valley on Saturday, and a cold, crisp, beautifully clear morning today.
It is hard to estimate exactly how much snow fell this week, because of strong winds, but in the alpine there was probably 50-80cm or more of new snow since Wednesday. Some of it was quite compact, because of the changing temperatures, but the surface was super light fluffy powder this morning, with no wind! It was like February, with an April twist in the afternoon.
Temperatures are set to heat up for the next few days, as warm South winds come in ahead of some more unstable weather before next weekend. The ski areas above 1800/2000m are fully loaded with snow, so the spring skiing should be great this week up high. There is one more week of Brévent/Flégère, Le Tour, Les Houches, and Courmayeur, as they will close on Easter Monday, the 18th April, but the Grands Montets will stay open until May 1st, with plenty of snow.
