Since the Eleanor storm has damaged the Panoramic Mont-Blanc gondola, the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc has been working hard to restore it in due time.
New faults have recently been found, but the management of the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc remains optimistic and still aims at reopening the Panoramic Mont-Blanc gondola by the end of May 2019.
The Panoramic Mont-Blanc gondola connects the Aiguille du Midi (3,842m) and the Punta Helbornner (3,466m).
Opened only during summertime, the Panoramic Mont-Blanc gondola is a 5 km journey which takes about 30 minutes.
The gondola takes one all the way up to the Italian side of Mont-Blanc and presents excellent views of the massif.
On the 5th of January 2018, the cable car was hit by the violent Eleanor storm, which caused considerable damage to the carrying cables of the gondola and caused two cabins to fall on the Glacier du Géant.
The gondola was closed for the 2018 summer season in order to change its power cable.
Lately, the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc has been focused on changing the tractor cable. In total, a stretch of 2.1 km and another of 500 meters will be changed.
Despite it also being a laborious work, the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc remains optimistic that they will reopen the gondola for the 2019 summer season.
